Computer Literacy - Introduction and Expectations

I have a feeling that most of you are going to tell me, “But I know how to use a computer – what else is there?” Well, very simply put – a lot. I started playing with computers when I was in the eighth grade and I can honestly say that I don’t know everything there is to know about computers. The rapid pace of computers and its associated technologies have made our society what it is today. Sure we will discuss Word, Excel, PowerPoint, designing of web pages, and robotics. BUT we would be remiss if we didn’t discuss the topics of networking basics, viruses, good search techniques, firewalls, parental controls, and biometrics.

!! WARNING !!

Last year my students thought that they will be on the computer every day.  THIS IS NOT THE CASE.  For the major part of the first marking period, we will be studying computers without acutally being on one.  Realize that in order for me to get you onto a computer, you need to learn the necessary background material.

Required Items

I require that you bring in the following items EVERY TIME WE MEET.  Failure to do so WILL result in detention.

Coursework

I want our coursework to be fun. Yeh, sure some of it is pretty boring material but I will try to make it as pleasant as possible. My goal is to take the coursework and make it applicable to you and your future academic studies. We will have two general categories:

Grade Breakdown

I hold no secrets – I don’t take out my crystal ball and conjure up grades.  Your grade is not determined by me, but rather by your performance in this class.  Your grade is a weighted average and can be calculated at any time.

If You Are Absent

If you are absent it is YOUR responsibility to get the notes, assignments, etc. that you missed.  That is the purpose of this website.  Also get the phone numbers of a few of your classmates just in case your computer is down!  Finally, you can always come and ask me what you missed.
